The Australian Labor Party has firmed marginally to $1.18 favourite to retain office at the next Federal election, despite the new fire-brand Coalition front team taking aim at an embattled Prime Minister over the “Australia to 2050” report!

Centrebet’s Neil Evans said rookie Coalition leader Tony Abbott had sharpened the knives on Labor’s targeting of seniors and handling of the population growth and climate change management ahead of Federal parliament’s first 2010 sitting tomorrow!

“They may be a long way behind, and the new leader has hardly been a vote-swinging appointment, but this Coalition team will not die wondering, and a struggling Labor government will be under enormous pressure to validate its widespread spending,” Evans said. “It’s significant to remember that while all of the big bets are on the ALP, actual bet numbers are right down the middle. We do say one bet is one vote, so the Coalition is not out of the fight just yet!”

Evans said one of the key early moves for the Opposition would be selling the costings on its own climate change policy having battered and effectively beaten the government on the controversial ETS plan late last year.

Nearly $150,000.00 has been traded on the Federal election with Centrebet so far, although after a quiet January, the bookmaker is expecting punting interest to be reignited once the parliamentary wars resume!

Meanwhile, Labor is in to $1.19 (from $1.20) in Victoria to retain office at the next State poll, due later this year, with the Coalition out to $4.40!

And despite being just over a year away from the next election, the rise in popularity for new NSW Labor leader Kristina Kenneally has not translated into money, with punters still wiping the ALP! The Coalition is a red-hot $1.15 favourite in NSW to win back office in March 2011, with Labor quoted at $4.90!
