The money is turning the way of seasoned first-up sprinter Nicconi on Centrebet ahead of tomorrow’s Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington after punters bored into returning race favourite and Caulfield Guineas winner Starspangledbanner in early market action!

Centrebet’s Neil Evans said several thousand had arrived for Nicconi today, including one bet of $2,000.00 at $7.00, and he had been trimmed to $6.00! “Nicconi has a dynamite first-up record, and the track clockers say he’s ready to fire again, so it’s not surprising punters found the $7.00 sensational value,” Evans said. “But this is super-tough race with 11 horses resuming and eight three-year-olds, many suited to the Flemington short course!”

Bets of $3,500.00 and $3,000.00 led an early rush of money for Starspangledbanner, reportedly brilliant in trackwork, while Qld visitor and natural leader Burdekin Blues has also been well backed at the $5.00 on Centrebet after drifting out from $4.60!

High-class Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights has eased from $8.00 out to $8.50, while class three-year-olds Shellscrape and Headway are holding their $10.00 quote! The Anthony Cummings-trained Sister Madly has been well specked at big odds from $34.00 down to $21.00!

The best-backed runner on Centrebet anywhere around the country has been VRC Derby runner-up Extra Zero first-up in the C S Hayes Stakes (1400m)! “Apart from one bet of $1500.00 at $4.80 on Encosta Belief, the money is all for Extra Zero who’s shortened from an opening $3.60 into $3.10,” Evans said. “Punters are banking on power and class first-up for a horse that looks well treated under the race conditions!”

The Peter Moody-trained filly Salinas has also been well specked from $12.00 down to $10.00 for the Group 3 Vanity (1400m), although a significant bet of $2000.00 at $7.00 has come for the stablemate Speedy Natalie, as well as smaller wagers, pushing her into $5.50! The Cummings-trained Tallow remains a $4.60 favourite in a wide market!
